Saturday Bets! Railway Stakes day 2024

Our attention turns to the west coast this Saturday with the first of the G1s of the summer Perth Racing Carnival taking place at Ascot.

The feature race of the day is the 139th running of the Railway Stakes over 1600m.

The richest race of the Carnival will see a mix of local talent take on east coast invaders for a share of the of the $1.5 million prize pool.

The most famous horse to win this race since its inception is NORTHERLY (2000) who then went on to win the Cox Plate (2001, 2002) and the Caulfield Cup (2002).

BELCLARE has been on fire with two fast wins of late for popular trainer Bjorn Baker. Baker's first trip to the west was in his first 12 months of arriving in Australia. CANTONESE had one win from 12 starts with champion trainer John O'Shea before Baker was in trusted with the gelding by leviathan owner Gerry Harvey. CANTONSE won 6 races for Baker in his first prep before earning a crack at the G2 Perth Cup, where he was unplaced.

Tip Via The Stats:

16. ZIPAWAY $8 – 2u

·         Non-favourite; SP $8; Barrier 12; 4YO; Non-Mare; 53kg; Saddlecloth 16; Used Lee Steere Stakes as a lead up

13. SUPER SMINK $10 – 1u

·         Non favourite; SP $10; 4YO; 53kg; Saddlecloth 13; Won the Asian Beau Stakes

Nic Ashman Tip:

12. PORT LOCKROY $18

Best last 200m of the day when resuming then good again without luck in Silver Eagle. Both those races were slowly run and then he struck a brutal race, which I don’t think he was ready for, in the Golden Eagle. Only 2L off the winner and drops to 53kg here.
