Saturday Bets! Oct 5

The 2024 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes headlines a bumper day at Flemington this Saturday with six Group Races in Melbourne setting the tone for so many horses over the next four weeks of the Spring carnival.

The Turnbull has traditionally been a stepping stone for many horses seeking glory in the three big long distance events of the Spring – and while we have legends achieve this feat – VERRY ELLEEGANT (2020) win Turnball/Caulfield; WINX (2017/18) win Turnball/Cox; MAKYBE DIVA (2005) win Turnball/Cup – winning the Turnball doesn’t necessarily mean success later in the prep with GREEN MOON (2012) the last horse to achieve Turnball/Cup double.

Trackwalker Info – Flemington October 5

"For races over 1400m or further: Lane 1 a small penalty with lane 2 better and winnable. The ground from lane 3 out to lane 10 appears to be the best.”

TURNBULL STAKES – 2000m

  • Maher/Eustace have won the last two Turnbulls

  • Waller has won 5 of the last 9 Turnbulls

  • 17 of the last 18 winners have won from Barriers 1 – 9

  • Only 1 favourite has won the Turnbull in the past 5 years

  • The last 4 year old to win was in 2015 (PREFERMENT)

  • 2 of the last 14 winners have carried 58kgs or more

Tip Via The Stats:

4. VIA SISTINA $4.40 – Waller; Second favourite; 57kgs; Distance; Good track

7. ATISHU $12 – Waller; Barrier 5; Non favourite; 56kgs; Track/Distance

Nic Ashman Tip:

ATISHU has an almost perfect record [3:2-1-0] over this track and distance including a G1 WFA win. Her only defeat over the 2000m here at Flemington was her 3rd placing in the Australian Cup behind CASCADIAN and PRIDE OF JENNI. Looks good form for this.

As we turn to Sydney, the October long weekend is synonymous with the NRL Grand Final on the Sunday – and the Epsom Handicap at Randwick on the Saturday.

A jewel in the ATC crown before the arrival of The Everest, the Group 1 Epsom is still held in high regard on the Sydney calendar with the race in recent years used as the end goal for horses who have started their prep earlier in August.

Nevertheless, the race has some distinguished winners with WINX (2015), HAPPY CLAPPER (2017) and HARTNELL (2018) all winning in the last decade. Also distinguished are the leading trainers – Gai Waterhouse and her Dad, Tommy Smith, who have won the event 7 times.

EPSOM HANDICAP – 1600m

·         5 of the last 6 winners have used the Bill Ritchie as a lead up race

·         4 of the last 6 winners have been 4 year olds

·         4 of the last 6 winners have carried 52.5kgs or less

·         The last favourite who won was KOLDING (2019)

·         The last 4 winners have won from BELOW Barrier 7

Tip Via The Stats:

12. MAJOR BEEL $10 – Under 52.5kgs; Non favourite; Distance; Waterhouse

9. TOM KITTEN $10 – 4 year old; Used Bill Ritchie; Non favourite;

Nic Ashman Tip:

CEOWULF finished 2nd to RIFF ROCKET twice at G1 level in the autumn and only just failed in a high pressure 2000m contest last time. The switch back to a mile suits.
