The VALERO TEXAS OPEN this weekend boasts some big names - Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg and Hedeki Mastuyama - all looking to have their game set to peak for the Masters.
TEE UP's pro-golfer Mick Gannon is going against the grain, willing to risk the favourites.
"TPC San Antonio is a challenging layout that has proven to reward experienced players time and time again," Gannon said.
"There is no substitute for distance control and accuracy in your approach shots at this venue."
Corey Conners has won this event twice in the past four years and is finding form at the right time. He’s -17 is last four final rounds at TPC San Antonio and is clearly the player to beat. Given his recent form and success at TPC San Antonio, betting on Conners to win or finish in the top 5 or top 10 seems like a safe play. His track record at this venue suggests he could be a strong contender.
Jordan Spieth started to season in fine form, but has subsequently missed two cuts. He’s one of the hardest workers on tour and I’d be surprised if he’s not competing on the weekend given his affinity with this golf course. The winner of this event in 2021, Spieth has shot a combined -11 his last two final rounds at this course.
Matt Kuchar has been out of form missing 6 of 8 cuts this season, with his best finish being T39 at Pebble Beach. But golf is a funny game and the return to one of his favorite hunting grounds could very well spark a return to form for the 45year old. Kuchar has finished T2/T3/T12 at his last 3 appearances and has secured 4 T5 finishes in his career at TPC San Antonio.
